Consulting

More important than the outward beauty and style of a hand-built custom bike is the fit. No matter how beautiful it looks, a custom bike is only as good as the fit.

A custom designed bicycle is like a hand-tailored suit. The cuffs come just to your wrists; the shoulders allow enough freedom to move your arms, yet still look tight and sleek; the pants (or skirt) are fitted, yet comfortable.

The Interview

Before I measure you, I'll need to make some broader assessments. You and I will meet for an interview, either in person or over the phone, and I will ask you some in-depth questions. For example: What type of rider are you? What type of rider do you intend to become? What are your strengths, weaknesses, injuries, etc.? What are your preferences and goals (e.g., performance vs. comfort)? I want to get to know you so I can determine how to get the most out of your custom frame, both anatomically and aesthetically.

The Fitting Session

The fitting session involves a comprehensive measuring process using my fully adjustable Serotta Size Cycle. We'll dial you in using your preferred saddle, pedals, and bars, and we will compare our results with measurements from your current bicycle. The design and building process doesn't start until you and I are satisfied with the fit.

What if You Can’t Come to My Shop for a Fitting?

If you can’t come to the shop to be fit, we can still work together to properly fit you.

I can work directly with other fitting professionals if needed. (Hint: If you don’t have somebody in mind, ask around at a good LBS.)

If you want to go it alone, there is a form available (click here) that you will need to fill out and send back to me, including measurements.

The Design Process Begins...

The interview is finished and I've taken your measurements. The last step before building begins is the design. I use a bicycle CAD application to mock up your frame design. In addition to simply inputting your measurements, I can address issues such as tolerance and toe overlap. We'll go over the CAD rendering and compare notes. Click here to see an example of the CAD rendering.

Once you approve the design, the building begins!

THE SICI FITTING PROCESS

I've studied at the Serotta International Cycling Institute, which has developed the most advanced and comprehensive system for fitting cyclists.

The rigorous curriculum focuses on the following areas:

Functional anatomy for cyclists (e.g., the musculoskeletal structures associated with power production, postural control, bike control)
Advanced cycling biomechanics
(e.g., the movements and forces produced by the lower extremity during cycling)
Flexibility assessment and how to integrate this information into a cycling position
Cycling aerodynamics and position
Fit-related complaints and injuries
(e.g., the common complaints and/or injuries that are associated with an improper bike fit)

For more information, see the SICI Website.
